Sarah Mitton hasn’t let a disappointing Olympics linger.
The Canadian shot-putter posted the world’s best indoor throw since 2013 on Friday when she recorded a distance of 20.68 metres on her final attempt to win a World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold event in Karlsruhe, Germany.
The throw tied her own Canadian record and allowed Mitton to overtake Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands (20.09 metres) and two-time world champion Chase Jackson of the U.S. (20.06 metres).
2024 Olympic champ Yemisi Ogunleye of Germany (19.49 metres) was fourth.
“As soon as it leaves your hand, you know it’s a really good one,” said Mitton, per World Athletics. “I immediately knew it was going to be over 20. It matched my outdoor PB in February. I’m really excited about it.”
It marked the first time since the 1991 world indoor championships in Seville that three women have eclipsed 20 metres at an indoor competition.
Mitton, 28, posted the best throw in qualifying at the Olympics in Paris, but then finished 12th in the final.
The Canadian rebounded later in the year to win gold at the Diamond League final in Belgium.
Mitton captured silver at the 2023 world outdoor championships.
