‘I’m coming’ – Gout Gout addresses Usain Bolt comparisons and issues blunt Noah Lyles warning
Australian teenage sprinting sensation Gout Gout sent a warning to Noah Lyles as he plans to make a splash on the world stage this year. The 17-year-old has hit global headlines for his mind boggling times and comparisons to Usain Bolt. Gout is the fastest ever Australian over 200mGetty He broke Bolt’s Under-16 200m record last year and then smashed the Australian national record, held for 56 years by Peter Norman, when he set a time of 20.04. Success on the global stage beckons and that could come as early as this year when the World Championships head to Tokyo in September. Gout is planning to race in Tokyo and the times he is posting shows he is more than ready to announce himself. That 20.04 time would already have placed him sixth in the 200m final at the Paris Olympics last summer. In a podcast with Noah Lyles, who won bronze in that event and gold in the 100m, and fellow American track star Grant Holloway, Gout had a warning. “I’m trying to show you what’s up. I’m trying to come out there with a bang,” he told Beyond the Records. “Whatever I’ve got to do to show Noah I’m coming for that spot. “Obviously it’s a learning experience, but deep down I’m trying to get a medal for sure, be in that final and running up Noah or trying to chase Noah down.” Responding with a smile, Lyles said: “That’s what I love to hear. “I want you to come up to me and say, ‘Yeah, I am going to take your spot.’” Gout already had a word of warning for future rival LylesYouTube The world is already watching him and those comparisons to nine-time Olympic gold medal winner Bolt are going nowhere. Addressing the talk, Gout said: “I’m trying to be the next Gout Gout. Being compared to Usain Bolt, everyone wants to be the next star. “Usain Bolt is the best sprinter and best athlete. “To be compared to him is obviously great, but I’m Gout Gout and I want to make my name as big as his. “I want people younger to be ‘your going to be the next Gout Gout’. I want to be like that.” When asked about people already looking up to him, he added: “It crosses my mind sometimes. Just me being me and how people are quite literally looking up to me and trying to be me sometimes. It’s crazy to think about. Lyles is the current 100m Olympic champion and also won bronze in the 200mGetty “I was once that kid trying to be the next Noah Lyles, trying to be Usain Bolt, trying to be the next icon. “Being the next icon is surreal and it’s crazy.” Gout was a relative unknown when the Olympics rolled around last summer, but Los Angeles in 2028 are already on his mind. After that, the Games are heading to his hometown of Brisbane when he will still only be 24. He said: “That’s the end goal, for sure (to run at Brisbane 2032). Obviously LA, which is in 2028. I’m looking forward to that. “I’ll be aiming to head there and also the World Championships this year in Tokyo. I’m aiming to be there as well.” How Gout and Bolt’s stats compare The Gout vs Lyles rivalry already looks to be a fiery one we can hopefully enjoy for years to come.
