“Invincible” Creator: Superhero Fatigue Isn’t Real

One person with an obvious stake in the result when it comes to the superhero genre is “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman executive produces Amazon Prime’s animated series based on his comic, which serves as a coming of age tale of superhero Mark Grayson/Invincible, who is the first born son of Omni-Man – the most powerful superhero on Earth.

Recently Kirkman sat down with Variety and weighed in on the ‘superhero fatigue’ debate. The topic has only gotten more heated in the wake of several superhero film failures in the past few years.

Kirkman is on the side that it’s not an issue. In fact, he suggests it doesn’t really exist and is more one of audience malaise with just badly done superhero films:

“I don’t think superhero fatigue is a real thing, but I do think that the genre of superhero storytelling has become so ubiquitous that it’s gotten to a point where it’s not fresh and it’s not new.

You can’t just be a superhero show and not have anything special about you anymore because I think the novelty has worn off. But that’s really exciting to me, because now it means that everyone is so familiar with superheroes that you can push things in interesting directions.”

Kirkman was offering his take while attending the third season premiere of “Invincible” earlier this week. The new season unleashed its first three episodes today on Amazon Prime with weekly episodes following for the next few weeks.
