The road transport department (JPJ) issued 298 notices in Selangor for various offences during Op Penyamaran, an undercover road safety operation which was conducted in conjunction with Chinese New Year from January 20 until February 5.

As reported by Bernama, Selangor JPJ deputy director Datuk Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat said the non-compliance with traffic lights with was the most common offence with 127 notices.

This is followed by emergency lane abuse (66), hogging the overtaking lane (39), riding a motorcycle without a helmet (35) and using a mobile phone while driving (21). Other offences include not having a valid driving licence (six notices) as well as driving with an expired road tax or not having insurance coverage (four notices).

“Failure to comply with traffic lights can be prosecuted under Section 72 (2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which provides for fines ranging from RM300 to RM2,000,” said Ahmad Kamarunzaman. “When a vehicle is detected committing an offence, we will stop it for inspection and issue a compound notice,” he added.

The operation was carried out to ensure road users are aware that the department constantly monitors all locations around Selangor at all times. The special operation involved JPJ officers in plain clothes and the use of unmarked vehicles.
