A new report from Auto Express suggests Mazda is preparing to expand its electric vehicle line-up with an SUV to rival the Tesla Model Y. This comes following the discovery by AutoGuide that the Japanese carmaker had trademarked the name ‘CX-6e’, with Mazda UK managing director Jeremy Thomson telling the publication to “watch this space” when asked why an electric sedan is coming first before an SUV.
The sedan in question is the Mazda 6e (known as the EZ-6 in China), which will go on sale in the United Kingdom in the first half of 2026, although European markets will get it earlier in the summer of 2025. As for the CX-6e, there isn’t much in the way of details for now.
The SUV is likely to be a five-seater and could be developed on the same platform as the 6e, which is a joint venture product with Changan that uses the same EPA1 platform as the Deepal L07. The architecture is also used for Deepal’s S07 – a competitor to the Model Y – that measures 4,750 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, 1,625 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,900 mm.
At last year’s Beijing Auto Show, Mazda showed off the Arata concept that was widely believed to preview the next-generation CX-5. The production version of this is set to debut this year and is widely expected to be a Changan tie-up model.
Another speculation is Mazda could use its own, in-house dedicated EV platform called SkyActiv EV Scalable Architecture which was announced back in 2021. At the time, the company said this platform will be used for EVs of various sizes and body-style types due to be introduced between 2025 and 2030 – the first model based on this is tipped to arrive in 2027. This timeline falls in neatly with UK’s zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate that requires 80% of new cars sold in the country to be zero emission by 2030.
