Penguins’ Sidney Crosby out Friday vs. Rangers, still considered day-to-day

Canada will hold its breath for at least one more day.

Sidney Crosby will miss Friday’s matchup between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Rangers, head coach Mike Sullivan announced.

The captain of both Team Canada and the Penguins suffered an upper-body injury midway through the third period of the Penguins’ 3-2 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

“He will not play tonight… Right now we are just taking it one day at a time,” Sullivan said. “He’s participating in the morning skate which is encouraging from our standpoint.”

The team pre-planned for Crosby to skate by himself on Thursday and he was on the ice for the team’s optional morning skate on Friday.

This will mark the first game Crosby has missed since Game 6 of the first round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, also against the Rangers.

Team Canada opens the 4 Nations Face-Off on Feb. 12 in Montreal, and the availability of Crosby remains at the forefront of discussion.

The Penguins will play one more game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday before the league takes a break for the tournament.
