The Volkswagen Future Plan is how the German carmaker aims to increase its competitiveness and improve revenue. Announced on Wednesday, the most important part of the ambitious plan is the introduction of a future entry-level electric vehicle (EV) priced at around 20,000 euros (about RM92k).
Volkswagen says the concept for this upcoming model will be shown to the public at the beginning of March this year, although the company’s employees have already been given a glimpse of it. For now, the rest of us get a teaser image of a vehicle that appears to show hints of the Up, a city car that ended production in 2023.
“The new all-electric entry-level model will be a Volkswagen in the genuine sense of the term. It is therefore appropriate that our employees at the Wolfsburg plant will be the first to have a preview of the design before the general public,” said Daniela Cavallo, chairwoman of the general and group works council of Volkswagen Group.
It’ll be a while until we get to see the production version though, as this is only scheduled for 2027. The company stopped short of providing a name but this is presumed to be the ID.1, given its starting price is just below the production ID.2all that will reach dealerships earlier in 2026 with a base price of less than 25,000 euros (RM115k).
“An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering!” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand.
According to Volkswagen, the entry-level EV is part of a new electric small car family developed under the umbrella of the Brand Group Core within the group. Cars in this family will be built on an evolved version of the modular electric drive (MEB) platform, with the ID.2all being the first member.
In addition to an entry-level model, Schäfer emphasised that the Wolfsburg plant would continue to play a vital role in Volkswagen’s electric masterplan and that the relocation of Golf production to Mexico was to create space for modern technologies.
“New production processes will be introduced in Hall 54. Our goal is to build the next-generation electric Golf on the new SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) platform there, along with the high-volume electric T-Roc. This will establish Wolfsburg as the capital of our new all-electric compact class,” he said.
