The next film from esteemed director Werner Herzog will be titled Bucking Fastard, and star acting sisters Kate and Rooney Mara.
Deadline has reported that Herzog will write and direct the film, with production set to begin in the spring in Ireland and Slovenia. The piece is said to be based on a real-life story of Joan and Jean, twin sisters who live together on the fringes of society.
Called “the most important film director alive” by French New Wave film-maker François Truffaut, Herzog is known for his intricate, obscure stories that embrace a unique directing style. Hi most famous works include documentary Grizzly Man, historical drama Aguirre, The Wrath Of God, and his 1979 horror remake Nosferatu The Vampyre.
He has become a pop culture curiosity in recent years thanks to his unusual delivery on camera and quirky personality. Despite his grounding in independent film, he has made unusually mainstream appearances as an actor, in films such as Tom Cruise action movie Jack Reacher and TV show The Mandalorian.
Kate and Rooney Mara have both been in the acting business for over two decades, yet Bucking Fastard will be there first project together. Kate Mara is best known for political drama series House Of Cards, as well as films like Brokeback Mountain and 2015 Marvel film Fantastic 4.
Rooney Mara is known for her performances in psychological dramas The Social Network, Her, and Carol, the latter of which earned her an Oscar nomination. Her last major film appearance was the historical drama Women Talking with Frances McDormand.
Last year, director Herzog made headlines for not being able to watch hit film Barbie for more than 30 minutes, asking “could it be that the world of Barbie is sheer hell?”
