Brave New World Director On Getting To Introduce Adamantium To The MCU

In a recent interview promoting the film, Captain America: Brave New World director Julias Onah opens up on getting to introduce Adamantium to the MCU. The ‘special fantasy metal’ trope has been around far longer than even Marvel comics. However, Marvel always had two. Vibranium, which we’ve seen since the beginning of the MCU and Adamantium. So far in the MCU Adamantium has been missing. Though I do like to imagine Thanos Sword was made of it, even if never stated.

Of course the reason for that omission was a rights issue. Adamantium was seen as belonging to the X-Men characters, legally. Therefore, until Disney purchased Fox, they didn’t have the rights to have the metal named. Now Marvel owns almost everything except Spider-Man’s rights and Brave New World will introduce this fantasy metal to the MCU.

Speaking with Screen Rant Onah said,

“Adamantium is much more durable. Adamantium is not like Vibranium, which can absorb kinetic energy, Adamantium, as we know, will eventually be a part of Project X. It will eventually be a part the story of Wolverine. So Adamantium now becomes this resource that could change the world in a way that’s very different because Vibranium is something that is really under the purview of the Wakandans. This is why it becomes an amazing geopolitical football in our film.”

“But also what’s so great about the MCU is it’s an opportunity to take things that are iconic from publishing and find a way to reimagine them for this universe in a way that could be really exciting. And because we haven’t had mutants in the past, because we haven’t had Adamantium, it became such a fun way to surprise audiences with a new sort of vision of what it could be.”

“And I’m just still pinching myself that I get to have the movie that introduces Red Hulk, that introduces Adamantium, that introduces Serpent Society. It is fun for me as a geek, and I think it’s going to be a blast for all audiences when they go see this movie.”

There are quite a few outlets using this part of the quote as evidence. Claiming Onah is confirming we’ll see Project X and the creation of Wolverine in the MCU.

“Adamantium, as we know, will eventually be a part of Project X. It will eventually be a part the story of Wolverine.”

I think he’s talking from the point of view of what it means to the comics and could mean to the films myself. You get the feeling Jackman isn’t going anywhere for a while yet. Eventually though, I’m sure we could get a backstory showing Wolverine’s origin as Weapon X. Though, perhaps after he’s introduced to X-Men? Who knows for sure though?
