Costly “Wonder Woman” Game Gets Rebooted

Warner Bros. Games studios lost $300 million last year due to the failures of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” and “MultiVersus,” and unfortunately, a new report suggests the future doesn’t look much brighter.

The new Bloomberg feature offers status updates for each of the company’s main studios. It reveals that many of the projects people want to see are still years away from reality.

Monolith Productions (“Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor”) announced a new “Wonder Woman” single player game back in 2021, but details have been thin since then. There’s reason for that though.

The report indicates the game tried to re-tool the studio’s celebrated Nemesis system used in the “Middle Earth” game into one less about combat and more about friendship. That didn’t work.

So, the studio reportedly rebooted the project with plans for a more traditional action-adventure formula. Development costs are at $100 million already, and the game may still not ship at this point.

Rocksteady Studios is reportedly moving forward with development on a new Batman game, but one that’s likely years away and no longer under the purview of company founders Jamie Walker and Sefton Hill who exited in late 2022.

Meanwhile, Avalanche Software is planning to release more content for “Hogwarts Legacy” along with a sequel.

The report suggests some of the blame is being put on outgoing executive David Haddad, with former staff telling the outlet that he seemed to have little actual familiarity with gaming.

Larger issues at Warner Bros., including the failed acquisition by AT&T and the chaotic merger with Discovery, have also had an impact.
