Samsung landed in the smart ring segment last year. The company’s first Galaxy Ring was positioned as a strong contender to the classic Oura and others, offering all of their health features without a monthly subscription, which can save you money in the long run. However, the company is reportedly planning to make these wearables much more functional. More specifically, future Galaxy Rings could allow you to control the screens of other devices.

Samsung patents system to control other devices using Galaxy Ring

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has published a patent filed by Samsung in July 2024. The diagrams accompanying the document show a Galaxy Ring controlling devices such as a laptop and a tablet.

According to the patent, the smart ring is capable of maintaining communication with at least two devices at once. This could allow you to control things that happen on the screen, such as moving files, scrolling, and tapping icons. The diagrams also say that the smart ring has a feature that enables file transferring between two connected devices. This seems similar to what Apple’s Continuity features, like “Universal Control” offer.

The patent also notes that, in order to use the file-moving options, all the devices must be connected to the same WiFi network. The diagrams specifically show a laptop and a tablet. It is unknown if the feature could also work on phones or if it could work with more than two devices.

A description of the patent says that the control system provides “natural continuity between a display of the electronic device and a screen to be displayed on a second display of the second electronic device.” Including such a feature would make the Galaxy Ring the most advanced smart ring available. Currently, these products are limited to health and fitness tracking. Giving it exclusive options that no other ring has could be a good way to boost sales even more.

First gen model was a success

That said, the launch of the original Galaxy Ring was a huge success for Samsung. The company even had to ramp up production to keep up with demand. An earlier Samsung patent showed a system that automatically adjusts to the size of your finger. It’s unknown if these technologies will make it to the potential Galaxy Ring 2 this year. The company released a couple of additional sizes for the original model in the meantime.

If we had to bet, the second generation of the wearable will likely focus on refinement and optimization. After all, it’s the path Samsung products have taken lately.
