Interviewing for Job With Lower Salary than Current Salary
Next week I have an interview for a job that with a lower salary range than my current salary and am looking for some advice. Currently, I make $130k but in a remote role that is tenuous under the new presidential administration (I am not a federal employee, but adjacent and dependent on federal funding). While I have seen no indication I will lose my job, things seem to be happening fast. So, I applied for a remote role with a small regional non-profit as a hedge. It is with a very reputable organization and I am well suited for the role with my skills and experience, if not a bit overqualified. The salary is $105k, though the benefits are better than what I have now. I'm trying to calibrate how I'll approach the interview because on the one hand, I'd be happy in my current job if I wasn't worried it would be eliminated. On the other hand, the role I'm interviewing for is genuinely exciting, though it is less prestigious and a lower salary (and I'd have to make up the different teaching on the side, maybe). I would take it if offered and things continued to look they way they do in my current role now (tenuous, chaotic, which is a shame because it was great before). How do I approach the interview without giving the sense that I applied as a backup/contingency plan? How do I discuss salary and questions about being overqualified? Any advice appreciated!
