Jonathan Majors NOT Returning To The MCU Despite Rumors

The controversy surrounding actor Jonathan Majors continues to be a hot-button topic among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. Fresh off the release of the trailer of his potential comeback film Magazine Dreams, ScreenGeek reported that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is reconsidering Majors’ return as Kang the Conqueror in the MCU. But not so fast.

Hours after the story broke, TMZ came out with their counter-report that Majors “has not engaged in any talks to return to the MCU” following his 2023 criminal trial. The actor was fired by Disney shortly after being found guilty of two misdemeanor charges from the March 2023 incident involving ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. Additionally, Majors was dropped by his management agency and several ad campaigns.

According to the latest Barside Buzz, He Who Remains will return in Loki Season 2.

Though Majors received praise from fans and critics for his performance as Kang, his messy arc has only added to the MCU’s creative woes since the start of Phase Four. From his first appearance as the ill-fated He Who Remains in Loki: Season 1 to the bait-and-switch reveal of big bad Kang as one of several variants in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Majors’ role is Marvel’s equivalent of Kenny from South Park. He’s far less of a threat than Thanos and more of a joke villain despite Majors’ acting talents.

Following Majors’ arrest, plans for his bigger role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty were retooled for Robert Downey, Jr.’s big MCU return as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. This will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars with Doom continuing to carry the big bad torch intended for Kang. Yet, many Kang threads have yet to be resolved on screen.

Majors’ last MCU appearance was as Victor Timely in Loki: Season 2 whose season finale had set up bigger plans for the character. Then there’s Quantumania’s mid-credits sequence revealing Majors as Immortus as he prepares the Kang variants for a multiverse war. Though there were rumors of recasting Kang with stars like Coleman Domingo, Marvel simply opted to move on from the character. It is not totally out of the realm of possibility for Majors to return as Kang post-Secret Wars should his film career rebound as fast as his personal life since the incident. For now, talks of Feige allowing the actor back into the Marvel family as he did for James Gunn must be taken with a grain of salt.
