Production has finally and officially begun on the upcoming live-action film adaptation of iconic Japanese anime and toy franchise “Gundam” for Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks.

The companies have released the first poster for the project which aims to be the next big live-action anime adaptation following the success of Netflix’s “One Piece” and “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. In addition they’ve made it clear the film will get a theatrical release.

The project was first announced back in 2018 with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”) slated to helm the project. That switched with Jim Mickle (“We Are What We Are,” “Sweet Tooth”) taking over as director late last year.

Comic legend Brian K. Vaughn is reportedly still attached to write the screenplay. Bandai Namco also announced that it will be creating a North American subsidiary, Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC, to help in terms of the film’s production.

It’s not clear if the new film will tell an original story or be an adaptation of one of the prior series in the franchise. Created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the original series began in 1979 and is set in the Universal Century, an era in which people have emigrated to space colonies because of a growing population on Earth.

Those living in the colonies seek their autonomy and launch a war of independence with battles fought by piloting robots known as mobile suits. One of the cornerstones of all anime, the internationally renowned franchise spans 83 animated series and movies while its toys generate over $600 million annually.
