He has enjoyed spells with Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, QPR, Stoke City and Southampton. The 61-year-old unexpectedly dropped down the divisions in February 2022 to take over at Bradford. The Cumbrian side are currently 92nd in the football pyramid. They were relegated from League One last season and appointed Mike Williamson to turn around a sinking ship. The club signed 12 players in the January window – but sacked Williamson earlier this week after falling five points adrift at the bottom of the league. Hughes will be partnered at Brunton Park by assistant coach Glyn Hodges. The pair have penned rolling contracts until the summer as Carlisle look to avoid dropping into the National League.
