Man Utd told Ruben Amorim’s £50 million transfer target is ‘a real throwback’

United largely kept their powder dry in January with only wing-back Patrick Dorgu representing a significant addition to a squad badly in need of attacking reinforcements. With Marcus Rashford set to spend the remainder of the season on loan at Aston Villa, Amorim is almost totally reliant on the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee. The Netherlands international, who has endured a tough start to his United career, did at least get on the scoresheet in last night’s FA Cup win over Leicester, but United are sorely lacking in wide areas. With that in mind, Amorim is understood to be pushing a move for one of his former Sporting Lisbon charges Geovany Quenda. United are already reported to have agreed a £50 million fee with Sporting and Quenda’s compatriot, former Southampton defender Jose Fonte, believes he would quickly establish himself as a fan favourite. ‘Geovany Quenda is only 17 and he has blistering pace. He’s very, very quick. He’s one of those players that once he gets the ball, he runs at you. He doesn’t turn around or play the ball backwards. Manchester United have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Geovany Quenda (Getty) ‘He is so direct and he reminds me of how Manchester United played under Sir Alex Ferguson, he is a bit of a throwback in that sense and that is exciting,’ he told Boyle Sports, who offer latest Premier League betting. ‘He gets the ball and wants to make something happen, when he gets the ball in the final third he knows exactly what he wants to do and puts defenders on the back foot so they end up doubling up on him. ‘He’s a very interesting player because he’s still 17 and he has blistering pace and a great left-foot, he’s creating havoc here in Portugal and could do the same with Manchester United.’ Geovany Quenda quickly established himself as a key part of Ruben Amorim’s system at Sporting (Getty) Fonte, meanwhile, is also a huge admirer of Leny Yoro who, like so many recent United signings, has struggled to hit the ground running. ‘When I played with Leny Yoro he was only 16, can you imagine playing senior football at 16 in a position which is so difficult for a young player because you can’t afford to make any mistakes,’ said Fonte of his former teammate at Lille. The only way to learn is to play and that’s what he did, you have to back yourself to come back from making mistakes and at the time we had Paulo Fonseca in charge who really believed in him. He gave him that margin of error and it was just very nice to have him for a couple of years to play alongside. ‘What I liked about him apart from his qualities on the ball, his technical ability, his passing ability and his vision was his understanding of the game.’

Manchester United have been told that a key Ruben Amorim transfer target, Geovany Quenda, will be a ‘real throwback’ if he arrives at Old Trafford in the summer.
