An angry mother will move mountains to help her child. A whole group of them can change the world. Netflix's Toxic Town introduces us to one such group, who made an indelible impact on environmental policy after fighting for their kids' health and safety in the English town of Corby in 2009.
Toxic Town is based on the real-life story of the Corby poisonings, the first case in the world to establish a link between atmospheric toxic waste and birth defects. "Focusing on the mothers, who took on a David and Goliath battle for justice, the series traces through the years of their fight as a terrible truth comes to the surface," the series' synopsis reads.
Jodie Whittaker (Doctor Who) and Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, The White Lotus) star as two of the first mothers—Susan McIntyre and Tracey Taylor respectively—to put together a pattern between their children's conditions. "Didn't drink, didn't smoke. Sometimes children are just born different," says Susan as the trailer reveals her baby's under-formed foot. In this town, however, there actually was a culprit—the Corby Borough Council, which undertook a dangerous project to reclaim a decaying steel mill on the edge of town. It's up to the mothers to fight for justice for their own children, and generations of children to come.
Toxic Town also stars Rory Kinnear, Robert Carlyle, Brendan Coyle, Claudia Jessie, and Joe Dempsie. All four episodes premiere February 27 on Netflix. Check out some first look images below:
