Capcom has a double whammy of news for Onimusha fans after the reveal of Onimusha: Way of the Sword back in December. Not only has Capcom released a new video message from producer Akihito Kadowaki and director Satoru Nihei regarding the upcoming game, but Capcom has also announced a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
According to Kadokwaki, Capcom is focusing on three core aspects for Way of the Sword: Compelling characters, which includes a new protagonist and foes that are more than just visually interesting; the setting of Kyoto; and what’s being referred to as “the ultimate sword fighting action”.
“We decided to set this game in the Edo period of historic Japan,” explains Nihei. “You’ll explore historic locations around Kyoto, such as Kiyomizu-dera Temple, in a heroic tale of a soul samurai fighting against hordes of twisted creatures known as Genma. The protagonist, due to a twist of fate, finds himself wielding an Oni gauntlet. Now in Onimusha, he sets about mowing down the monstrosities roaming the world of the living and feeding their souls to the gauntlet.”
Regarding the game’s difficulty, Nihei explained that they aren’t trying to make it “impossibly difficult”, but instead are gearing it so fans can experience “thrilling sword fights and take satisfaction from slaying their enemies.”
As for the remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, Capcom hasn’t revealed much as of yet. However, according to the official site for the remaster, the game will retain the setting and gameplay systems of the 2002 PlayStation 2 original, as well as feature new enhancements and quality-of-life improvements. Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny will arrive later this year, while Onimusha: Way of the Sword is aiming to release in 2026 for PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series.
