Ahead of tomorrow’s trailer drop, Vanity Fair got a first look at six images from Jurassic World Rebirth.
The accompanying article reveals that the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park franchise will lean into the horror elements.
“It’s got to be dangerous,” asserts producer Frank Marshall. “You’re in a new place, you don’t know what’s around the corner. You’ve got a different jungle, you’ve got more water, you’ve got higher cliffs. There’s a little bit of everything that’s scary.”
“When you make a creature, you get a big, massive pot and you pour in your favorite monsters from other films and books,” says director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla). Describing a particular dinosaur that turns up in the trailer, he teases, “Some Rancor went in there, some H.R. Giger went in there, a little T. rex went in there.”
The filmmaker drew inspiration from the works of Steven Spielberg, who serves as executive producer. “To me, it’s like a heist movie that meets all the films of Steven Spielberg I loved growing up,” Edward said. “The three films we were orbiting were Jaws, Indiana Jones, and the awe and wonder of the original Jurassic.”
Edwards continues, “Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program. Most people don’t think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. But I was scared shitless, to be honest, when I was at the cinema watching the T. rex attack. It’s one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history, so the bar’s really high to come on board and try and do this.”
Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.
Scarlett Johansson stars as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs.
When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.
Mahershala Ali co-stars as Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team leader. Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis. Rupert Friend appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.
Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein round out the cast.
Written by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, Jurassic World Rebirth hits theaters on July 2 via Universal.
