OPPO is set to announce its next foldable, the Find N5 in a couple of weeks. While OPPO has not yet confirmed a specific date, we do know that the launch is in two weeks, and the Chinese and global launch will happen at the same time. That is actually quite rare for OPPO and other Chinese OEMs. They typically launch in China first, with a global launch a month or more later. But the hype is real for the Find N5, and it’s not hard to see why.
The Find N5 will be the successor to the Find N3, which was released in October 2023. Yes, almost a year and a half ago. That’s a long time in the foldable segment, and OPPO has some huge upgrades up its sleeves. One major upgrade we’ve been seeing teased is the thinness. OPPO has been posting pictures comparing the thickness to a pencil, a stack of two quarters, and even other phones on the market – like the iPhone 16 Pro.
Unfortunately, the OPPO Find N5 is unlikely to launch in the US, under that name. However, we do expect that it will land stateside under the OnePlus brand, likely as the Open 2.
The Find N5 is said to measure under 4mm when unfolded
Thinness has been the name of the game for foldable devices as of late. The HONOR Magic V3 launched last Fall, which was just 4.4mm when unfolded, and 9.3mm when folded. That would make it thinner than the Apple iPad Pro (M4). It was already incredibly thin, and now the Find N5 is said to be even thinner. It appears, based on photos OPPO has shared, that they are really only limited on how thin they can go, by the USB-C charging port.
That’s incredibly thin, and it might be so thin that it is uncomfortable to hold. The HONOR Magic V3 was already a bit uncomfortable to hold unfolded for a long period of time, but I did get used to it, and loved the size and weight. So we’re expecting a similar experience with the Find N5. It will also have flat sides, like its predecessor, something that should help make it feel more comfortable in the hand, versus the Magic V3.
Thinner, but somehow with a much larger battery
Other rumors are pointing to a huge bump in battery capacity with the OPPO Find N5. Rumors are pointing to around a 5,900mAh capacity battery. That’s a huge increase from the 4,800mAh cell in the Find N3. That’s almost 20% larger. So how is OPPO able to make the phone so thin, while also including a nearly 20% larger battery inside? Carbon-Silicon batteries.
A new technology that has taken the Chinese OEMs by storm is Carbon-Silicon batteries. We’ve seen this used by OPPO, OnePlus, HONOR, and many other companies. Samsung is reportedly going to use it in their upcoming Galaxy S25 Edge smartphone. Using Carbon-Silicon allows for a different design that can include higher energy density. Allowing OEMs to pack more juice into an even smaller battery.
Just to put things into perspective for the Find N5, the Find X8 Pro that launched late last year, has a 5,910mAh capacity battery inside. And now a foldable is said to have nearly the same size battery inside. My mind is blown.
OPPO already has the best foldable software, how will they improve?
OPPO and OnePlus already have, arguably, the best foldable software on the market. While Samsung feels more polished, OPPO and OnePlus have really gone to the next level with these larger displays. For OPPO it’s called Boundless View, and Open Canvas on OnePlus. And it’s by far my favorite thing about using the OnePlus Open (aka the Find N3).
This essentially allows you to use more screen real estate than you actually have. Boundless View lets you have two apps side-by-side and since the Find N3 had a regular 18:9 outer display, it means that apps side-by-side are normal size and not super skinny. But you can also have a third app on the side, that you can switch between. Or one above or below it, like YouTube for watching content. It might sound messy, and at first, I thought it was, but when you actually use the software, you find out that it is an incredible use of space on a foldable display.
Now, the real question is, how will OPPO build on this? We don’t really know yet. Most of the leaks that we’ve seen have been of the hardware. Which is what OPPO seems to be spending most of its time on. So we might have to wait for the launch event to know for sure. But one thing’s for certain, it’s the phone I’m most excited for, this year.
OPPO Find N5 will also sport the new 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite
Qualcomm recently listed, quietly, a new variant of its flagship chipset. There is now a 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite that is primarily for foldable devices. Instead of having two Prime Cores, it has a single Prime Core that can reach 4.32GHz. The reasoning for this is that foldables generally can’t have larger batteries (though OPPO is proving that wrong), they are also thinner, allowing for less space for a Vapor Chamber as well as room for heat to dissipate.
That will be a pretty huge upgrade from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the OPPO Find N3. And it’s going to be interesting to see how it is able to handle the heat of the Snapdragon 8 Elite, compared to other phones with this chipset – like Galaxy S25 and OnePlus 13.
Other specs for the Find N5 include an 8-inch 2K AMOLED main display, and a 6.4-inch outer display, both will be 120Hz. There will also be three 50-megapixel cameras around the back, likely tuned by Hasselblad. And it’ll also have faster charging at 80W wired and 50W wireless. The Find N3 only supported 65W wired, with no wireless charging support.
Needless to say, this is going to be one beast of a foldable.
