Kiev’s forces have mounted a new offensive in the area, deploying dozens of armored vehicles
The Russian military on Thursday repelled a major attack launched by Ukrainian forces in Kursk Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said. The attack was focused on Russian positions to the southeast of the town of Sudzha.
The assault involved up to two mechanized battalions with dozens of armored vehicles. The thrust was concentrated around the villages of Ulanok and Cherkasskya Konopelka, located some 9km to the southeast of Sudzha, the Russian military said.
Ukrainian forces advanced towards Russian positions in several waves, but failed to seize the settlements, the ministry noted. At least six tanks, three infantry fighting vehicles, three assault breachers, and 14 other armored vehicles were reported destroyed.
The Russian military did not provide an estimate of Ukraine’s personnel losses in the botched attack.
Videos circulating online purport to show the Ukrainians advancing in large convoys that include engineering vehicles, tanks, and other armor. The convoys suffer repeated strikes by fiber optic-guided drones, with multiple vehicles ending up disabled or destroyed.
The Russian Defense Ministry released a short video showcasing FPV drone strikes on Ukrainian armor during the failed attack. The video shows multiple hits on tanks, armored cars and engineering vehicles advancing towards Russian positions.
Kiev invaded Kursk Region early last August, seizing a number of settlements in the vicinity of the town of Sudzha. The Ukrainian-held pocket has shrunk over time, as Moscow has recaptured significant ground. However, Ukrainian forces continue attempts to push deeper into Russian territory.

According to the latest estimates from Moscow, Kiev has sustained extremely heavy casualties since the beginning of the offensive. Up to 58,000 Ukrainian servicemen have been killed or wounded, with over 330 tanks, more than 240 infantry fighting vehicles, and nearly 200 armored personnel carriers destroyed.
