Nintendo boss Shuntaro Furukawa has said you won’t need to worry about stock shortages for the Switch 2, due to new anti-scalping measures.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was properly announced last month in a hardware-focused teaser trailer that quickly became one of the most-viewed gaming videos in YouTube history.
Now, in a new interview, Nintendo president Furukawa has said fans don’t need to be worried about a repeat of the Switch’s launch, which saw worldwide stock shortages in 2017 while scalpers resold the console with a significant mark-up to desperate fans. “We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations,” he promised (via VGC).
It was previously reported that the Switch 2 had originally been set to launch last year but was delayed “to ensure the initial inventory of the successor console and a line-up of software titles at the time of its launch” would meet demand.
Nintendo hasn’t revealed what those anti-scalping measures might be but to gain access to one of its worldwide hands-on preview events, fans had to sign up using their Nintendo account. However since then, a number of successful entries have appeared on reselling sites like eBay.
Fans still don’t know when the Switch 2 will be released, how much it will cost or what games will be available at launch. A special Direct presentation has been announced for April though, while another is rumoured to take place later this month which will focus on the original Switch.
Nintendo has teased a new Mario Kart game though, and the company has also assured fans that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. Furukawa has said they will support the Switch “as long as there’s demand”. During a recent earnings call, it was reported that the Switch has now sold over 150million units, making it the third best-selling console of all time after the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2.
In other news, Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on video games will cause “significant harm” to the industry and “everyday Americans”, says one leading industry group.
