MJ Lenderman is officially back out on the road supporting Manning Fireworks, one of our favorite albums of 2024. He wrapped up a two-show run at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse on Monday night (1/27), where in addition to his own songs from the new album, 2022’s Boat Songs, and more, he did a few covers. Two of them, Neil Young’s “Lotta Love” and Smog’s “37 Push Ups,” are songs he’s done frequently in the past, but he also did a rendition of This is Lorelei‘s Box for Buddy, Box for Star track “Dancing in the Club.” Watch attendee-taken video of that below.
When we spoke to Lenderman for a cover story of our digital magazine last year, he shouted out Box For Buddy as one of the albums he’d been listening to most lately, saying, “Can’t shake that on. The mix of sounds–it feels very midi and almost computer-based but it’s still a guitar album. It’s everything I love about Sparklehorse or something like that, just great pop songs. Lyrics are great too. Covers a lot of sonic territory; it’s just like things I haven’t really heard blended together before.”

This is Lorelei also open Lenderman’s second of three NYC shows at Brooklyn Steel on April 29, and Nate Amos (as part of Water from Your Eyes) and Lenderman also shared a bill at a much more intimate NYC show on New Year’s Eve at Night Club 101.
