Aaron Rabin, a writer on Amazon’s “Jack Ryan” series and the upcoming sequel to Bob Odenkirk’s action hit “Nobody,” has been set to pen the film adaptation of Square Enix and Avalanche Studios’ video game series “Just Cause” at Universal Pictures.
The over-the-top games debuted in 2006 and follow Rico ‘Scorpion’ Rodriguez, a gregarious, denim-clad latino black ops agent who carries out missions for the U.S. government.
This usually involves destabilising dangerous regimes and rogue nations by blowing up every piece of infrastructure in sight. The games were famous for their destructible open sandboxes, humor and crazy action.
Rodriguez frequently uses a grappling hook, wingsuit and retractable parachute to perform physics-defying stunts including standing on fighter planes and missiles mid-flight to fighting in the crater of an active volcano.
“Blue Beetle” director Ángel Manuel Soto is attached to direct the project which has multiple producers including Dmitri M. Johnson (“Sonic the Hedgehog 3”), Timothy I. Stevenson (“Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft”), Mike Goldberg (“Dredge” game), Kelly McCormick (“The Fall Guy”) and filmmaker David Leitch (“Bullet Train”).
The team behind “Tomb Raider” (at Amazon, and separately Netflix) and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” will also be producing via Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson, with Dan Jevons executive producing.
