A depth centre is headed to Oklahoma City.

The New Orleans Pelicans traded Daniel Theis and a 2031 second-round pick to the Thunder in exchange for cash considerations, the teams announced on Wednesday.

The ’31 second-rounder received by OKC will be the least favourable of New Orleans and the Orlando Magic.

Theis, 32, is averaging 4.3 points and 4.3 rebounds across 38 games with the Pelicans this season.

The eight-year veteran has also spent time with the Boston Celtics, Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Clippers.

Now, Theis heads to a Thunder team that sits first in the Western Conference at 39-9 despite a long-term injury to star big man Chet Holmgren. Off-season pickup Isaiah Hartenstein, meanwhile, has only played in 28 games as he’s dealt with multiple ailments.

The move drops the Pelicans below the luxury-tax line. New Orleans was $1.4 million over the tax line prior to the move and by shipping off Theis’ expiring $2.1 million, they sneak underneath. The Pelicans, historically, have done their best to operate under the tax line and avoid paying those hefty penalties.
