“Emilia Pérez” director Jacques Audiard is now distancing himself from his film’s star Karla Sofía Gascón following the controversy over her past tweets and apologies for them.
Speaking to Deadline, Audiard says he hasn’t spoken to her and “I don’t want to,” adding that she is “in a self-destructive approach that I can’t interfere in, and I really don’t understand why she’s continuing.”
He added: “Why is she harming herself? Why? I don’t understand it, and what I don’t understand about this too is why she’s harming people who were very close to her. I’m thinking in this thing of how hurting others, of how she’s hurting the crew and all these people who worked so incredibly hard on this film.”
This follows on from Netflix distancing itself Gascón in an effort to salvage the film’s Oscar prospects. The streamer is no longer covering expenses for her travel to the various awards shows or her styling for any appearances at these events.
One big question is if she’ll show up for the Oscars where she’s nominated. Either way, Variety reports that AMPAS has opted to ditch a planned ‘Fab 5’ tradition for actors and will instead do it on directors this year so there won’t be the issue of a previous Best Actress winner having to laud Gascon’s performance on stage.
The larger question overall though is how much all of this will impact the film’s Oscar chances. That is presently unclear, but she isn’t the only controversy over the film. The movie’s depiction of Mexico has come under fire and Audiard has also responded to that saying: “It seems I’m being attacked in the court of realism. Well, I’ve never claimed that I wanted to make a realistic work.”
He also says: “either people haven’t seen the film properly, or they haven’t seen it at all and are acting in bad faith.” “Emilia Perez” is now available on Netflix.
