There’s both some good and bad news when it comes to the two primary Aeromexico Salon Premier lounges at Mexico City International Airport Benito Juarez (MEX), as flagged by Live and Let’s Fly.
Aeromexico lounges in MEX closed for most of 2025
I’m not sure how I missed this until now, but Aeromexico has closed both of its primary Salon Premier lounges in Mexico City, including the ones intended for domestic and international flights. The lounges closed on February 10, 2025, and are undergoing a renovation
The plan is for the lounges to reopen in December 2025. Admittedly airport construction projects rarely wrap up on-time, so I wouldn’t count on that timeline sticking, and I’d be surprised if the lounges open before 2026. There’s only one picture so far of the new Aeromexico lounge design, and it looks a lot nicer than the old setup. So I’m happy to see the airline investing in its lounge network.
Aeromexico is taking an unconventional approach with its lounge renovations. Typically, airlines will close one lounge at a time, rather than closing both lounges at once. Conventional wisdom is that it’s preferred if it happens that way, so that some lounge capacity is maintained.
However, personally, I appreciate Aeromexico just ripping off the band-aid, and doing it all at once. Rather than a disrupted lounge situation over two years, it’ll just be a disrupted lounge situation over one year. As the airline describes it, “closing both lounges simultaneously allows us to optimize construction efforts and deliver a fully upgraded experience in the shortest possible time.”
Aeromexico has no lounge alternatives for guests
What’s Aeromexico doing for passengers who are eligible for lounge access? Well, nothing…
The airline simply points out that some customers “may have access to other lounges within Terminal 2 through a co-branded card.” Obviously this is less than ideal, though realistically speaking, it’s not like there’s any other lounge that could handle the overflow traffic from Aeromexico’s two lounges, since they’re the busiest at the airport. It simply wouldn’t be possible.
That being said, it sure seems to me like the airline could do something:
- Aeromexico could give customers eligible for lounge access a food or drink voucher for some of the airport’s concessions, so that people can at least have something to eat or drink
- Aeromexico could set up a makeshift concessions area in some quiet part of the terminal or at a gate, so that guests can at least pick up some grab & go food and drinks
So it’s a pretty poor showing on Aeromexico’s part. Personally, I’m at least happy to see the airline is doing both lounges at once, so that we hopefully won’t have to deal with this in 2026 and beyond.
Bottom line
Aeromexico is investing in its two primary lounges at Mexico City Airport. The airline is doing construction work on both lounges at the same time, with the hope of reopening them in December 2025. It’s anyone’s guess if that timeline sticks.
Unfortunately Aeromexico is giving no alternatives to guests eligible for lounge access, other than suggesting accessing lounges through other means.
