How would you finish this old unfinished bookshelf?

Hello! I recently purchased an old bookshelf from a thrift store, and I really like it—it's cute, in my opinion. However, it's unfinished and rough, and since I haven't worked with wood before, I'm unsure of what can be done with it. I also don't know what type of wood it's made of. I understand that sanding will be necessary to make it smoother, and staining isn't essential as I’m not looking to change the color (though if you have experience working with wood and think it would look great in a particular warm color, I’d appreciate your input). I would like to cover it with a coating after sanding to give it a bit more shine and make it easier to clean, if that makes sense. Since it's an older piece (I’m not sure how old, but it could be a few decades old), I’m wondering if it's even possible to restore it. However, I'm open to any suggestions. What would you recommend doing with this shelf? How would you go about making it nicer while keeping the project low-cost and low-effort? I’d like to improve its appearance without spending too much time or money on multiple layers of oiling, sanding, or staining. Thank you so much for your help! https://preview.redd.it/kksksw1r8gie1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1c3508667293f39447fb3d4e8509da668761742 https://preview.redd.it/9r4m1y1r8gie1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38fe163efe7155791a4235cd73def8e0e0668cc4 https://preview.redd.it/n1f9mw1r8gie1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=641c163e8165a724b3615e1c5408ae559e42ecc5 https://preview.redd.it/65jiix1r8gie1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c9ef3ff79fb8a8aac3d9f29e0887c99baa8147d submitted by /u/pinkbird2 [link] [comments]
