HVAC coolant replacement for R-22

It appears my AC unit has a small leak, and because of this I no longer have any coolant in the system. I've asked around and apparently I can't get R-22 anymore, as it's not longer manufactured and none of the suppliers around me have any old stock. I've talked with a couple plumbers/HVAC guys, and they said it is possible to clean the system and put a replacement coolant in, but then if I ask about this, they immediately try and sell me a whole new unit as a replacement. They have not come out and checked the unit, this has all been done over text, sending pictures of data plates, etc. Is this something that a fairly experienced DIY'er can do, or is it a specific "no, dont touch that, hire a professional" sort of territory? submitted by /u/reginathrowaway12345 [link] [comments]
