I used trial lenses to dial in my vision to 20/15!!!

I went to the eye doctor twice and got frustrated because I felt like they rushed my appointments and my vision still seemed 720p. I knew my vision could be sharper because when I was a teenager I had a wonderful prescription that gave me 4k vision. I got inspired and decided to read about optometry and how to correct your vision on your own! First I got a baseline of my vision with a standard snellen chart. I found that with both eyes open (and current glasses on) my vision was at 20/30. It was worse in my left eye than my right. Then I bought a set of trial lenses and got to work. I spent a whole day learning about the difference between sphere and cylinder and how to isolate your axis for astigmatism. My original prescription was correct about my axis for astigmatism in both eyes and I was able to calculate that myself. I found that my left eye needed more corrective power (more negative sphere). Next for my right eye I tried a variety of sphere values and none made a lick of difference. Higher sphere values (+/-) made it worse, and the lowest values had no effect at all. So I just decided to focus on the astigmatism and stepped up the cylinder values. I finally dialed it in and I'm seeing better out of that eye than ever before. I will say I made use of a duochrome chart test to make sure my sphere values were correct. I used a bright screen also so I could make sure my astigmatism was actually corrected (no streaks). Finally I retested my vision with a few different randomized snellen charts and yep 20/15!!! I can't believe I DIY'ed my eye exam. submitted by /u/Sheepherder-Optimal [link] [comments]
