Subfloor and pet urine
My husband and I recently bought the house nextdoor to us. It was abandoned for about a year and a half and the guy that lived in it was a bit of a recluse with lots of cats and dogs. Anyway, we're trying to do a lot of the remodeling ourselves and while we're both pretty handy people, its been a learning experience. I pulled up all the flooring yesterday. Everything smells like cat and dog pee. It's pretty evident that his animals just peed freely in the house and no clean up was done. It soaked through to the subfloor. You can see a couple spots by the door there, but those spots are ALL over the house. The house smelled like urine when we bought it, but we didn't realize the extent of it. We've been doing some research and getting mixed results. We've found cleaning with an enzyme cleaner and painting over with that Killz primer could fix it. But we've seen some say to just replace the whole subfloor. We can't really decided what to do. The subfloor seems solid. No soft spots or rotted spots. It appears the subfloor was painted before the flooring was laid down. We're having a contractor come look at it plus the ever growing list of other issues later today, but I thought I'd ask what my fellow redditors thought would be the best approach. Can never have too much advice! submitted by /u/maggie47128 [link] [comments]
