Blizzard has always had a strong presence at Gamescom, the big German games expo that takes place in August — and this year it will be there in force with a major World of Warcraft expansion reveal.
In the absence of a BlizzCon convention this year — Blizzard has confirmed that its big fan event will return in 2026, after a three-year hiatus — Blizzard will use Gamescom as a stage for the full reveal of the next WoW expansion, Midnight.
In a brief blog post, the developer promised “exclusive news and updates on the next chapter of the World of Warcraft: Worldsoul Saga — Midnight — directly from the development team, along with a few additional surprises we have in store.” Those will be World of Warcraft surprises, although Blizzard may have unannounced plans to feature its other games at the show, too.
Midnight is the second chapter in the Worldsoul Saga, a three-expansion arc planned by Chris Metzen, the original creator of the Warcraft setting. We know it will take place at least partly in Quel’Thalas, home of the Blood Elves, and that it will introduce player housing, a feature Blizzard has already revealed some details on. Beyond that, there’s a lot to learn about the expansion from Gamescom.
There’s no release date for Midnight yet, either. Most WoW expansions take around two years to make, and the last expansion, The War Within, came out in August 2024, so a release in mid-2026 seems likely.
