Better Option?

So to preface this, my wife and I recently bought a house last year. I've been doing a bit of building around the house including building an awning to keep the rain out, and a decent 8x8 front porch. Her mom's cats recently had kittens and she's going to give us some to keep outside to hunt the mice and stuff. Only problem is we have nowhere to keep them that won't be in the way and/or dry. So I'm asking for some "professional" opinions here with the question. Would it be better to just add a hanging 3x8 covered section to the front porch, or to go ahead and build a small porch under the awning out the back door?
