Kitchen Backsplash Dilemma, Help!

We’re replacing our tile backsplash and took down the old one, which has caused a big mess because the mesh tile was installed directly onto the drywall. We have mostly torn and exposed drywall paper now, and I have no idea what we should do here. Husband says if we rip out the drywall to install backer board we’ll have to take the lower cabinets off the wall in order to not damage the countertops when cutting out the drywall. Plus that’s a massive undertaking. Can we seal the ripped up drywall paper somehow, then put on the thin set for the new tile? Or, can we install backer board over top of drywall? I’m afraid that will be too thick and you’ll be able to see it under the edges of the tile. Obviously we don’t know what we’re doing but I’m trying to do this right. Just didn’t realize we’d be replacing drywall when we decided to change the backsplash. Pic below for reference. submitted by /u/LolaBeansandSoup [link] [comments]
