Luaus, waterslides and updated rooms: The Hyatt Regency Maui is now available from just 21,000 points

Every year, Hyatt makes changes to which hotels live in each category of the World of Hyatt award chart. For the most part, it’s news we don’t like to hear because some of our favorite hotels move up in category, making them more expensive to book, or shifting them out of reach for free night awards.

But it’s not all bad news. This year, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, a popular beachfront resort on the island of Maui, actually went down in points. Previously a Category 7 hotel, a standard award night would cost 30,000 points. Now, having shifted down to Category 6, those same nights are 25,000 World of Hyatt points. And if you’re lucky enough to find an off-peak date, you could snag a stay here for as little as 21,000 points.

HYATT

Located on Kaanapali Beach, this popular Hyatt property is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year. Back in 2021, a multimillion-dollar renovation saw rooms and suites (all 810, to be precise) get a full head-to-toe makeover with Hawaiian-inspired design, airy lanais with balconies and plenty of space to spread out.

But let’s be honest, you’ll probably want to be out and about enjoying all the resort has to offer.

For starters, there are six tropical pools, including one with a 150-foot waterslide. Kids can enjoy a special interactive children’s pool area, and there’s also a rope bridge guests can cross over the pools on. Or if you’d rather hang on the beach, reserve an oceanfront cabana to lounge in or take advantage of free backpack beach chair loaners you can carry around the island.

At the spa, get primped and pampered with an assortment of treatments like a classic deep tissue massage or a specialized HydraFacial. Or, if you’d rather spend your time leaning into local culture, book a paid activity like a Maui poke history and tasting class, visit Haleakala National Park or join an astrology class to see the stars from the remote Pacific island.

Whatever you do, don’t forget to stop at the lobby at 9:30 each morning to see and learn about the African penguins that call this Hyatt home.

This year, the resort is even bringing a taste of Nashville to the island with the Nashville Nights series, featuring hit country songwriters like David Nail and Eric Paslay, among many others, playing shows throughout the year.

And don’t worry about going hungry — there are 10 bars and restaurants across the resort. Enjoy a classic breakfast buffet at Swan Court Breakfast, prime cuts and seafood at Son’z Steakhouse, mouthwatering sushi at Japengo and even a Hawaiian shaved ice stand. For a real Hawaiian-themed dinner experience, make reservations for Drums of the Pacific Lu’au to get a taste of Hawaiian food and Hawaiian entertainment.

How to book

Now, as a Category 6 World of Hyatt resort, award nights cost the following:

  • Off-peak: 21,000
  • Standard: 25,000
  • Peak: 29,000

For those off-peak rates, there’s a good chunk of dates available in September when Maui is slightly quieter and less crowded, as well as the first part of December.

With the World of Hyatt Credit Card, you could get a few nights at this legendary Maui resort by earning 30,000 World of Hyatt bonus points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in your first three months from account opening and up to 30,000 more bonus points by earning two bonus points total per $1 spent in the first six months from account opening on purchases that normally earn one bonus point, on up to $15,000 spent.

Or, for a more versatile card, sign up for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and you could earn 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. Chase Ultimate Rewards can be transferred to Hyatt at a rate of 1:1, so you can transfer as many as you need to book this trip — and then keep earning more points that can be transferred to various airlines and other hotel brands.
