Marvel Rivals Chrono Tokens explained: All you need to know

Chrono Tokens are an in-game currency in Marvel Rivals that have a specific use. They are different from Lattice and Units, the other two in-game currencies available in the game. Chrono Tokens are more specialised, as they can only be used for one particular purpose.

In Marvel Rivals, Chrono Tokens are a currency purely used with the seasonal battle pass. They are different to Lattice and Units, as these tokens can only be used to unlock rewards on the battle pass, whereas Units can unlock new cosmetics and bundles in the in-game store. Lattice can be purchased with real money and converted into Units, so this currency is also related to items in the shop. 

Chrono Tokens can be unlocked in a few different ways. The easiest way to obtain them is via daily missions and challenges. As the name suggests, daily missions are a type of challenge that changes every day. Players can obtain a certain amount of Chrono Tokens for completing each mission. Daily missions can include completing tasks such as dealing a certain amount of damage or using sprays in a game. 

These tasks are small and not too time-consuming. Each daily mission can earn the player 30 Chrono Tokens, but they are capped at three or four missions. However, up to seven daily missions can be active, making it so that those who aren’t able to play every single day still have the chance to complete the missions and earn tokens when they can. Daily missions will also expire after 48 hours or so, and they refresh every 24 hours. 

Another way to get Chrono Tokens is by completing challenges in Marvel Rivals. These challenges are very similar to daily missions, but they are a bit more time-consuming and more specific. For instance, challenges sometimes task the player with getting a certain number of assists with one particular Strategist. As challenges take longer than daily missions, they are worth more, earning the player 80 Chrono Tokens upon completion. Challenges also last a lot longer. They tend to expire after around seven weeks or so, giving more casual players the chance to complete them 

Lattice can also be exchanged for Chrono Tokens. If players want to unlock the later tiers in the battle pass more quickly and without the grind, then they can do this via an exchange. Lattice is the currency that real-life money is exchanged for in Marvel Rivals, so if you want to get Chrono Tokens as quickly as possible to unlock battle pass rewards faster, then you’ll have to pay to do so (unless you have enough Lattice saved up on your account). The exchange rate for Chrono Tokens is equal to the amount of Lattice you have, so you can trade 100 Lattice to receive 100 Chrono Tokens. 

As mentioned, Chrono Tokens are an in-game currency specifically used to unlock tiers and rewards on the battle pass each season. Players who upgrade to the paid-for battle pass will have the chance to unlock every reward across multiple tiers. Even with the free battle pass, there are still plenty of rewards that can be unlocked with Chrono Tokens. 

The following items can be unlocked with Chrono Tokens in the battle pass:

Most of the cosmetics in the battle pass cost 200 Chrono Tokens to unlock. Skins are a little more expensive, costing 400 Chrono Tokens. Gallery cards are even more so, as they cost 600 Chrono Tokens to unlock.

The response to Chrono Tokens has been somewhat mixed, with criticism aimed at the slow acquisition and the lack of carryover of tokens into new seasons.

As is normal practice with live service games and certain in-game currencies, Chrono Tokens don’t carry over across seasons. This can be incredibly frustrating for those who have accumulated a lot of tokens by the end of the season. A Reddit post by Crimson_V expresses this irritation, and it is clear that many other players share the same sentiment, as the post has around 5,000 likes and over 1,000 comments on the post.

There are some exceptions to this reset, as well as ways that developers NetEase have tried to make things more fair. Chrono Tokens purchased with Lattice can be carried over due to the exchange of real money that is required to obtain them. As well as that, any battle pass rewards that have not been unlocked with Chrono Tokens by the end of the season are automatically given to the player. 

Another issue that some players have regarding Chrono Tokens is the slow grind to obtain them when it comes to completing challenges and daily missions. Steam user Grief Factory Employee  notes in a post that if they want to obtain a skin, they would need to collect 10,000 Chrono Tokens, which could take months. While this is certainly a lengthy amount of time, it’s also common practice in live service games. 

If players don’t want to pay upfront for a skin or cosmetic, then they will have to grind. A lot of skins in live service games aren’t even obtainable no matter how much time you put into grinding, but this is a much broader issue regarding the nature of live service games as a whole rather than a problem confined to Marvel Rivals.

They are pretty similar to a lot of other in-game currencies in live service games, although they are specific to the battle pass. Players can complete challenges and missions to obtain the tokens, but they can also purchase them with Lattice if they want to unlock rewards sooner rather than later. 

Although players have taken issue with certain aspects of Chrono Tokens, they can still be earned and used on in-game rewards for free. The free rewards aren’t as plentiful as those in the paid-for battle pass, but they are still there and accessible via Chrono Tokens, and that can only be a good thing.
