Missing tile + Waterproofing
I have been removing the grout from between tiles because it has seen better days. One of these tiles I noticed was loose, as in I could rock it with my hand, so I actually managed to get the tile off by just wiggling it slightly. It left behind all of the thinset, on the wall, which I chipped off to expose what I assume is some kind of waterproof backing, consisting of a mesh with a purple foam type stuff on it. Of course this got all mangled because the thinset was adhered to it. I have cleaned up the area to expose wood panels behind it, to see what I've got here. If you refer to the photograph, you will notice: 1 : There is on the bottom left corner of the empty space a disc type object screwed in. What is this? 2: On the bottom right of the picture you can see a grout line going down with all the grout removed (inbetween the lower down intact tiles), however, this has exposed a mesh, if you zoom in, but all of the foam stuff seems to not be there (disintegrated)? I was thinking of trying to adhere some new waterproof backing in the tile gap and try and get this tile back on (the tile came off completely intact). Can I do this? I assume I will have to remove the screwed in disc in the bottom left? Should I be worried about the fact that the foam seems to have disintegrated leaving only the mesh behind on the backing? Could I for example, use epoxy grout in these lines to waterproof it? https://preview.redd.it/l2iu6rhe7y7f1.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=319a496d00ae80967be243a80d877816115baaba submitted by /u/BlackHoneyTobacco [link] [comments]
