Nobody Knew the Dress Code at the 2025 American Music Awards

Awards season may technically be over, but celebrities have had a whirlwind of a red carpet schedule lately. Days after Cannes Film Festival wrapped up on the Croisette, the 2025 American Music Awards lit up Las Vegas on Monday night. While the show celebrates the biggest achievements in music, this year's celebrity red carpet might’ve sparked even more conversation on what wasn't achieved. Guests' looks seemed all over the place, leaving viewers wondering about what the dress code was.

That should be no surprise. One thing the AMAs are unofficially known for is a red carpet without a clear dress code outside of "formal"—and this year only added to that legacy. The fashion moments were wildly varied, jumping from laid-back to full glam in a matter of steps. Janet Jackson, who was honored with the Icon Award, rolled up in jeans, a fur jacket, and sneakers. On the other hand, former L'OFFICIEL cover star Ciara opted for a sparkling, gem-encrusted bodysuit by Bronx and Banco. Meanwhile, Reneé Rapp went for a more elegant gown from Gap Studio (which has been dominating red carpets lately, including at the Met Gala with Laura Harrier, led by Zac Posen).

Some stole attention with their heap of outfit changes. This year's AMAs host Jennifer Lopez delivered an evening complete with several outfit changes, from a floral Miss Sohee couture gown to a sleek and sexy cutout dress from Defaïence. 

Despite fans finding Easter eggs seemingly about a new album from Taylor Swift to come at the AMAs, she didn't show, and there was no news on forthcoming music.

From streetwear to couture, the contrast in what people wore to the 2025 AMAs left many viewers puzzled but still entertained.
