Overwatch 2 continues to expand on its lore with the release of its latest short story called ‘Futures Past’, centring around Soldier: 76.

The story was published online in celebration of Pride Month, which occurs in June 2025. It is the latest addition to a series of written media available on Blizzard’s website.

In the announcement online, Overwatch wrote: “On a mission in Runasapi, Soldier: 76 must face his past if he’s ever going to have a shot at a brighter future in our new short story, ‘Futures Past’.”

The story is over 30 pages long, and was written by Melissa Scott, who has published over 40 stories and novels. She is known for writing about queer themes and characters, and has won four Lammy’s and Spectrum Awards in the process.

The story is published as part of Overwatch 2’s in-game pride event, which includes a free Resilient rare Soldier: 76 skin and rainbow smoke bomb emote, available from May 30th to June 30th, 2025.

Overwatch has celebrated Pride for many years, with several of its characters part of the queer community, including Soldier: 76. During the event, the Midtown map will feature Pride-themed decorations, such as confetti, rainbow flags and more.

In addition, Overwatch 2 announced on its website that it is hosting a Pride art collage, creating a montage of submitted LGBTQ+ artworks to be displayed on its Blizzard campus in Irvine. Submission details can be found on the official website and must arrive before June 30th. There are also several sheets online for players to download and colour.

On the website, Blizzard wrote: “We will always celebrate our LGBTQ+ Heroes, players, fans, and team members who play, build, and support Overwatch 2 all year round.

“Remember that you are unique to this world, but that doesn’t mean you are alone. No one can take away the amazing things that make you a positive force in the world. Everyone will always be welcome in our amazing community.”
