The UK government’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport has revealed that it is on the hunt for a Head of Video Games and Esports.
The job listing describes the role as a leadership position in which the successful candidate will be “supporting growth of the video games and esports sectors.”
On the official UK Government website, the job description reads: “We are recruiting for a highly interesting and stretching role as Head of Video Games and Esports. The team works across fast-growing, innovative sectors, developing policies on important issues relating to the growth and competitiveness of the UK industry, and on the impact of games on society.”
It seems the government is going all in on investing in the video games and esports sector, with the role itself having a salary range of £52,082 – £61,084. It is full-time with hybrid working, and offers a two-year employment contract.
Applications are open until Sunday June 15th, 2025, with an information session held on Thursday, June 5th at 11:30 PM. The registration form for the information session is due before Wednesday, June 4th at 3 PM.
UK Government Increases Gaming and Esports Efforts
The job listing shows increasing interest and acknowledgements from the UK government for gaming and esports. To this day, the UK government still provide Video Games Tax Relief for Corporate Tax, last updated on May 21st, 2025.
While yet to be officially recognised as a sport, esports has received praise by notable officials such as Major of London, Sadiq Khan, who commented that Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is ‘a global leader’ in the industry.
The UK itself has had an increasing esports presence, with more tournaments and events being held in recent years. This includes major esports championships in League of Legends, Rocket League, Dota 2 and more.
This year, the British Forces Broadcasting Service held an esports league for UK armed forces.
Moreover, Riot Games will celebrate VALORANT’s fifth anniversary in London, Manchester, and Durham.
