Sand over clay soil in Crawl Space?

There was a vapor barrier in my crawl space since the 90s and it was not good. I discovered it was trapping moisture under it! Big time! I tore it all out last summer and now it's thoroughly dried out. There will be no more plastic going down in there. It's just dry, cracked, hard clay now. I'm thinking about putting some sand over it. I've seen all the crawlspace ads. I'm hoping to hear about real life experiences from Doityourselfers.
