Advice on speaker grille modification
I own a Lexus and was having rattling noises at high volume from the Mark Levinson subwoofer located between the 2 rear seats. A forum dedicated to this specific car, has members dealing with the same issue. About a dozen or so owners removed the housing that covers the speaker and cut out the plastic molded grille. It apparently worked for all of them, but it didn't solve the issue for me. Apparently, the airflow from the sub is causing vibration against the mesh fabric. If I place my hand over the cloth covering while I hear rattling, it stops. Below are before and after pics from the area I had to meticulously cut out. What I'd like to do if possible is remove the fabric, somehow remove the rest of the molded plastic inside the circular hole and then get some type of metal speaker mesh to form a circle with it and adhere it to the inside of that circular cut out. Kind of hard to explain in writing but hopefully my pics give you an idea of what is needed and what I'm attempting to convey. Any suggestions on how to cut out the remainder of the somewhat thick molded plastic inside of the circular hole? Cutting doesn't seem possible due to the thickness. Maybe use a soldering iron and try melting chunks of it away and then sand it down to make the interior flush? Where can I get some fine bendable metal speaker grill and what do you think is the best wat to attach it to the inner diameter of the speaker hole? Some type of metal ring? Also, where can I get fabric to reapply because the original will need to be removed? I have no experience in this, and my explanation might be brutal to read but I'd appreciate some guidance or tips if possible. This is the piece I removed that covers the sub https://preview.redd.it/vno5x04f4exe1.png?width=451&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0d47974284db9c2d8e772c3f674bd52024487bb This is the back before I cut out most of the plastic grating. https://preview.redd.it/oj8unehn4exe1.png?width=397&format=png&auto=webp&s=0042dfb8bb7c8e3dc18ee7f24df630f2f6906cc0 This is the back after I cut out most of the plastic grating inside based on what others did to eliminate the rattling. Unfortunately, it didn't eliminate the rattling. https://preview.redd.it/am51svcr4exe1.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6e071723c4241b0a61c5853655061bfa66ead541 This is what I'd like to do and hopefully someone has some advice on how to remove the remainder of the molded plastic. It's a little thick so cutting it with metal snippers would be tough. I will also need to remove the fabric that's glued to the entire front of the piece. I don't see how it can be salvaged while removing the remainder of the plastic. https://preview.redd.it/ralwfvou4exe1.jpg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c8f825f75ce41562d23cce3006b28a766029d8a3 I'd like to purchase some mesh metal like this and then mold it into a circular shape to partially insert into the hole that I cut out. Not sure what I can use for the outer diameter of the circle to make it rigid and maintain its form. That outer ring would need to fit snug into the cut-out portion on plastic molded piece. https://preview.redd.it/2wnou1hx4exe1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=7ecd97938ffe83161b45f77f601800a21355a861 The end result would look something like this. The fabric vibrating and causing a rattling sound would be eliminated and the metal mesh grille would take its place. https://preview.redd.it/aj23ga865exe1.png?width=451&format=png&auto=webp&s=6a37c2169bd1045e254c2dc4fd2b36adbcb8be13 submitted by /u/Enzo954 [link] [comments]
