Catan just got its first update since 2015. The new sixth edition of Catan is now available from a number of online retailers including Asmodee, Miniature Market, and the Catan Shop for $49.99.
The latest edition of Catan features new art, slightly larger game components, improved packaging, and a cleaner design, but the core mechanics and gameplay established in the original Settlers of Catan from 1995 are essentially unchanged. Catan is often credited as a title that popularized Euro-games for the American tabletop audience, with its crunchy mechanics and collaborative gameplay.
While it’s technically compatible with existing expansions from previous editions, like Traders & Barbarians, the sixth edition of Catan is also launching alongside updated versions of two of its biggest expansions, Seafarers and Cities & Knights. Both expansions are available for $49.99, and require the base version of Catan 6E to play. Seafarers introduces islands to settle in addition to the home island, while Cities & Knights brings some new depth to the base game by adding barbarian marauders and new progress cards, which can be used to upgrade your settlements.
The base version of Catan 6E and its expansions are capable of supporting up to four players, but to play with up to six players, you’ll need to purchase one of Catan’s extensions. Each extension features all of the necessary tokens and other components to add up to two additional players to your game of Catan. The extensions for the base game and the Seafarers expansion are available for 29.99, while the extension for the Cities & Knights expansion is available for $31.99. Just note that the extensions for Seafarers and Cities & Knights will require you to own their corresponding expansions in addition to the base game of Catan and its extension as well.
