Exoborne release: Everything we know about the open-world shooter

It’s been nearly two years since Exoborne was first announced at The Game Awards 2023, and anticipation is only growing stronger. Developed by Sharkmob AB and Red Kite Games, this PvPvE extraction shooter aims to go down a storm with fans of the genre. 

With gritty titles like Escape from Tarkov setting the standard, Exoborne hopes to make its mark by blending survival gameplay with dynamic weather and a post-apocalyptic twist. But with so many eyes on it, one question remains: when will the Exoborne release date finally be revealed? 

Exoborne is expected to be released before the end of 2025; exact window: TBA

The lack of an exact Exoborne release window suggests we’ll be waiting until Q4 of this year (October – December) or even early 2026. An official playtest launched in February 2025, with over 540K matches played during the beta.

While the Exoborne beta playtest suggests that the game is close to completion, many believe Sharkmob is keeping a release date quiet for a reason. Given the recent backlash about Rockstar Games delaying GTA 6, it’s likely that Sharkmob is keeping quiet to manage expectations. 

Many Exoborne playtesters on the r/EXOBORNE subreddit have complained that the game feels “clunky,” suggesting there’s still some work to be done. This could potentially put a spanner in the works regarding the projected Exoborne launch date of late-2025. 

Official pricing and pre-orders are yet to be confirmed; expected between $40 and $70

Following the trend of other similar extraction shooters, the Exoborne price could cost anything between $40-$70, which is the standard for most Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation, and PC games in recent years. 

Sharkmob’s previous game, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt, was free-to-play with seasonal content, so it’s possible that Exoborne could follow a similar monetisation model with battle passes, even if the base game isn’t free.

Given that there’s no release date confirmed, it shouldn’t be surprising that Exoborne pre-orders are yet to go live. Once a date (or release window) is set in stone, you should be able to secure either a copy of the game from Steam on PC, the PlayStation Store for PS5, or the Xbox Marketplace on Xbox Series X/S.

Exoborne will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S

The Exoborne platforms include PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. This has been confirmed with dedicated pages on the Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam websites.

The Xbox and PlayStation landing pages are both bare bones in details and content, with a release date “to be determined” instead of anything concrete. However, the Steam product page offers a little more, including multiple trailers, screenshots, and a deeper insight into the game’s lore and gameplay goals. 

Several Exoborne trailers have dropped since the game was first announced at the 2023 The Game Awards.  

As a Reborn, players drop into a post-apocalyptic U.S. transformed by nature gone wild, using their customisable Exo-Rigs to survive the deadly terrain with powerful abilities like grappling hooks. Players can surf the winds of storms, allowing them to get the drop on enemies. But Mother Nature is also deadly, as players must navigate climate change as they’ve never seen it before. With unpredictable tornadoes, lightning strikes, and other environmental hazards blocking their path, no two sessions of Exoborne will feel the same. 

Since it’s a PvPvE experience, players must fend for themselves against hostile bot factions and other player-controlled squads while gathering rare resources and getting out alive. Whatever gear is taken in a given session is forfeit if killed, so it’s all about weighing up the risk vs. reward. 

The system specs are yet to be released; expected to be moderate

Exoborne developer Sharkmob has yet to confirm the official Exoborne system requirements for PCS. The only details we have so far are the requirement for a 64-bit processor and operating system, the latter referring to Windows 10 or 11. 

Although by an entirely different developer, we can look at the specs required for a similar extraction shooter, Escape from Tarkov by Battlestate Games. At a minimum, Escape from Tarkov requires at least 8 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i5 3.2 GHz CPU (or equivalent). The GPU, which takes a hit when playing EFT, should be a DX11-compatible graphics card with at least 2GB of memory.

While the Exoborne release date is still under wraps, all signs indicate a launch in late 2025 or early 2026. With its recent playtest drawing over 540K individual matches, it has definitely left a positive impression on players, with the potential to be the next big name in tactical survival shooters.
