Hosoya’s Sandwich in Sendai, Japan

Hosoya’s Sandwich (Hosoya no Sando) was founded in 1950, 21 years prior to the introduction of the McDonald's chain to Japan. It happens to be the oldest surviving burger joint in the country. The founder, Masashi Hosoya, originally worked as manager of a commissioned officers club at the U.S. military base in Yamagata after World War II and opened his shop in Sendai City in 1953. Initially, locals dismissed his offerings as sandwiches and hamburgers were yet unfamiliar in Japan, apart from the few English teachers and novelty-seeking journalists in the neighborhood. Over time though, Hosoya's grew to be a local favorite. Inherited by the founder's son, Masahiro Hosoya, the burger shop retains every bit of its retro charms. From its bar counter to handwritten menus, the vintage atmosphere is unmatched. In front of the shop stands a mannequin nicknamed Dandy-kun, a beloved mascot who has stood the test of time. The signature burger is a simple dish, a classic consisting of specially-baked buns, a grilled-to-order whole-beef patty, sliced onions, ketchup and mustard.
