How to fix/reassemble a tension rode?

Hello, I got a secondhand tension rod from a neighbor and on the bus ride home I pulled it apart to make it shorter, but didn't realise that it was the extension pole I was pulling out! Now im trying to reassemble it and it just won't stay up or twist to extend like it used to
