I have two 31" wide windows to replace, and I have a couple extra 29" wide vinyl replacements. Can I just fill the 1" gap on either side?

The existing vinyl replacement windows in my dining room are 31-in wide. I had a contractor leave a pair of 29-in wide vinyl replacement windows from a prior job that he bailed on. They're new and uninstalled. The current and spare windows are the exact same height. Can I use the 29's and just put 1" of filler on either side? The prior replacement installation had sheet metal wrap over the original wood. Any filler to use the 29" windows would be exposed to the elements. Should I use regular wood (and a good exterior paint and caulk), or some other material, or should I have the whole exterior frame including filler rewrapped? submitted by /u/crakoczy [link] [comments]
