Les Adoberies (The Tanneries) in Lleida, Spain

The tanneries of Lleida are the oldest and best-preserved tanneries in Spain. Dating back to the 13th century, they were once part of a complex of seven tanneries where hides were processed into soft, flexible leather. Visitors can see the vats and water channels carved into the rock, which once facilitated the laborious tanning process and provide an insight into the medieval craft. The tanneries, which were discovered by chance in 2002 when a building was demolished, have since been extensively restored. A wooden bridge connects the two workshops and provides a view of the old facilities. The restored water flow recreates the original conditions and helps visitors to imagine the transformation of dry hides into leather products such as gloves, hats, boxes and harnesses.
