PGL event cancelled by City of Kraków hours after announcement

PGL has announced that its planned Counter-Strike 2 event once set to take place in Kraków, Poland in 2027 has been cancelled.

The cancellation was made hours after the tournament organiser unveiled the event, which would’ve been the first time a Counter-Strike event took place in infamous FPS city Krakow for a decade. Initially planned to take place from January 13th to January 25th, 2027, PGL‘s CS2 event was planned to be held at Kraków’s TAURON Arena.

According to a release, the arena informed PGL of the cancellation due to another event taking place at the venue in January for the next three years.

“This abrupt decision disappoints PGL and the Counter-Strike community, who eagerly awaited the tournament’s return,” stated the tournament organiser. “We sincerely apologise to the passionate Counter-Strike fans who were excited to witness PGL’s return to Kraków. While this decision is beyond our control, we remain determined to find a world-class venue to deliver the exceptional event.”

Despite the cancellation, PGL has confirmed it still plans on hosting a CS2 event from January 13th to January 25th, 2027. Details on the new venue have yet to be revealed.

With PGL intending on operating an event, it still clashes with the 2027 edition of the BLAST Bounty tournament which runs from January 12th until January 24th.

The overlapping dates mean teams will need to decide whether they choose to compete in PGL’s event or in the BLAST Bounty.

Event organisers are already planning the next two years of CS2 competitions after a change to Valve‘s tournament rulebook means organisers must announce events two years in advance. The change aims to ensure the shooter remains an open ecosystem where several organisers can host events.

PGL’s next CS2 event takes place in Bucharest, Romania in April. Sixteen teams will compete in the competition featuring a $1.25m (~£1.06m) prize pool.
