The American AAdvantage program has just launched a very generous promotion, though it’s targeted…
Earn up to 50,000 bonus AAdvantage Loyalty Points
Nowadays Loyalty Points are the metric by which you earn elite status in the American AAdvantage program. You can earn Loyalty Points through a variety of methods, ranging from flying, to credit card spending. Sometimes American offers targeted promotions to earn more Loyalty Points, though the value is typically limited.
Well, the airline has just launched a new promotion allowing AAdvantage members to “level up” their travel benefits, and it’s probably the most generous offer that we’ve seen in years. To find this offer, log into your AAdvantage account through aa.com or the American Airlines app, go to your main account page, and click on the “Promotions” tab. If eligible, you’ll see this listed there.
I see two sets of offers (and there are possibly others):
- If you earn 40,000 Loyalty Points (enough for AAdvantage Gold), you receive 35,000 bonus Loyalty Points (getting you to AAdvantage Platinum), or you can instead gift AAdvantage Gold to someone else
- If you earn 75,000 Loyalty Points (enough for AAdvantage Platinum), you receive 50,000 bonus Loyalty Points (getting you to AAdvantage Platinum Pro), or you can instead gift AAdvantage Platinum to someone else

As you’d expect, there are some terms to be aware of:
- Registration is required by May 23, 2025
- The reward is based on the Loyalty Points earned during the current AAdvantage program year, between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026
- All eligible Loyalty Points earned during the period count toward the offer, including those earned through credit card spending
- After completing the requirements, you have 60 days to choose your reward (bonus Loyalty Points or the ability to gift elite status)
- The bonus Loyalty Points will be applied toward the 2025 program year if the selection is made before February 28, 2026, while they’ll be applied toward the 2026 program year if the selection is made after that date
- If you choose to gift status, it’ll be valid through February 28, 2027
As a reminder, here are the current requirements for earning elite status with the program:
- AAdvantage Gold status requires 40,000 Loyalty Points
- AAdvantage Platinum status requires 75,000 Loyalty Points
- AAdvantage Platinum Pro status requires 125,000 Loyalty Points
- AAdvantage Executive Platinum status requires 200,000 Loyalty Points
This promotion could be worth taking advantage of!
Anecdotally, it appears that the less engaged you are in the AAdvantage program, the more likely you are to be targeted for this offer. Sadly I wasn’t targeted, which is a shame, since I dropped from Executive Platinum to Gold, and am working my way up the ranks again.
Often AAdvantage has promotions that just seem silly, since I don’t think they actually move the needle much in terms of consumer behavior. This promotion, meanwhile, is actually generous, and could be worth taking advantage of. Essentially American is encouraging people to qualify for a certain status level, and if they do that, they can either have their status upgraded by one tier, or they can gift that same status to someone else.
If you’ve been considering going for AAdvantage status, this could be a great time to do so…
Bottom line
American AAdvantage has a new Loyalty Points promotion. Members who are targeted just have to earn a certain elite tier, and can then either get a one tier status upgrade, or can gift status to someone else. This is one of the most generous targeted airline promotions we’ve seen in quite some time, so if you’re eligible, it could be worth taking advantage of.
Where you targeted for this AAdvantage Loyalty Points promotion, and if so, do you plan on taking advantage of it?
